Greetings followers! We’ll be spending the next few weeks digging into Google Trends and Baidu Index to determine what popular topics people search for the most.
Inspired by the Olympic Games, we’ve decided to create our very own Google VS Baidu Search Engine awards in which we’ll take a closer look at the top 3 searches for a range of popular topics, including sports, movies and video games.
In order to find the corresponding search volumes, we used Google Trends and Baidu Index and filtered searches that were made in the last 12 months. For the sake of clarity, we’ve chosen not to include the actual search volumes. As you can see in the screenshot below, by comparing different search terms over a specific period of time, we\’re given an index that allows us to sort them in terms of search engine popularity.
So let’s get these awards started! First of all, why did we choose to dedicate this week’s edition to football rather than say basketball or tennis?
1) Why choose football?
After comparing the search volumes for a range of sports on Google and Baidu, we were able to conclude that football is by far the most searched for sport in the world. Basketball is the 2nd most searched for sport on both search engines while American Football took the 3rd spot on Google. Tennis completes the podium of most searched for sports on Baidu.
Now that you understand why we chose to concentrate on football, let’s get stuck in! We’ll start off with the Google Awards for most searched for professional leagues, clubs and players before moving on to the Baidu results.

A few interesting insights there! Especially interesting to see FC Barcelona is the most searched for football club on Google while Real Madrid beats Barcelona to 1st place on Baidu.Despite this, Googlers search for Cristiano Ronaldo more than Messi while their Baidu counterparts seem more interested in the Argentine.
