Baidu is China’s most-used search engine and serves over 679 million internet users. Therefore, having a localized brand presence on this platform is non-negotiable for any business targeting the Chinese market.
For foreign brands and marketers, account registration is rarely friction-free. Baidu’s overseas form accepts many international dialing codes, but a listed code does not guarantee that the verification SMS will arrive or that the registration will pass the platform’s security checks. Chinese phone numbers can also trigger a security-risk message when used from abroad.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to register a Baidu account outside China. We’ll discuss three registration methods: a Chinese phone number, an international phone number, and an agency-assisted Baidu Ads account. Along with these are the insights from our team as we identify the errors you could encounter during registration and other alternative routes available for your business.
How this guide was prepared: Baidu product functions and overseas country-code availability were checked against Baidu’s public tools and registration interface on July 21, 2026. Registration issues and agency workflow reflect Sekkei Digital Group’s client onboarding experience in China.
What You Can Access With a Verified Baidu Account
A verified account may grant you access to Baidu’s services, but registration alone does not automatically activate every business tool. Website ownership, advertising eligibility, and submitted content may require separate verification or review.
| Tool | What You Can Access with a Baidu Account | Additional Requirement |
| Baidu Search Resource Platform | Submit sitemaps and URLs, review indexation data, identify crawl errors, and monitor search traffic and keywords. | The team must add and verify ownership of the website. |
| Baidu Tongji | Measure website traffic, acquisition sources, on-site behavior, and conversions for a China-focused website. | Tracking code must be installed across the website. |
| Baidu Baike | Log in and submit new entries or changes to an existing brand entry. | Edits remain subject to Baidu Baike’s editorial review. An account does not give a brand automatic control of its entry. |
| Baidu Ads dashboard | Create and manage campaigns, keywords, bids, advertising materials, budgets, and performance reports. | Requires a separately approved Baidu Marketing advertiser account and business verification. |
Different Ways to Register a Baidu Account Outside China
1. Register with a Chinese Phone Number
The most straightforward Baidu account registration process is using a Chinese phone number. If your company is already operating within China in any capacity, chances are you already have a local SIM card.
Go to the Baidu registration page (passport.baidu.com/v2/?reg), add your desired username/password, enter your Chinese mobile number, and click “Get SMS Code.”

Domestic Baidu Account Registration Page
You will receive a text with a verification code. After entering the correct code, your newly created Baidu account will be bound to the Chinese phone number you provided.
Many services (even for foreigners) now offer Chinese virtual SIM numbers. However, be warned: Baidu actively filters and monitors overseas registrations to prevent suspicious users from entering their system.
If you use a Chinese number outside China, you may see an error like “Your current operation is a security risk.” This is because the system often expects Chinese accounts to be created within China.
So, even if you have a Chinese phone, ensure you’re not using a suspicious VPN or IP. If Baidu blocks your attempt, you’ll need to try another method.
Common Security Errors When Using a Chinese Number Abroad
Using a valid Chinese mobile number does not guarantee that registration will succeed from outside China. Baidu may instead display a message stating that the current operation presents a security risk.
Baidu does not publicly disclose its complete risk-scoring logic. Based on our first-hand experience, the conditions worth checking include:
- A Chinese phone number being used from a non-China IP address
- Multiple verification-code requests from the same connection
- A VPN, proxy, or shared network changing the apparent location of the request
- Previous failed registration attempts associated with the number or connection
2. Register with an International Phone Number
Baidu provides a special overseas registration page for non-Chinese phone numbers. To access it, visit https://passport.baidu.com/v2/?reg&overseas=1.
It’s the same sign-up form. The only difference is that it accepts international mobile numbers. Users can select country codes, enter their phone number (no plus sign), and a username/password.

Baidu Account Registration Page for International Users
However, be aware of limitations: Baidu only supports specific country codes. As of mid-2021, some countries like Switzerland were supported, but others (e.g., Germany +49) were not.
Even if your mobile phone country code is allowed, Baidu’s system may randomly fail with a generic error (“verification failed”) if it flags the operation as suspicious. And sometimes, mobile carriers label Baidu’s SMS as spam.
If you didn’t receive an SMS with the verification code, try checking your phone’s spam or junk messages folder. Make sure you entered the mobile phone number correctly (no spaces or dashes). Try again after some time, as Baidu may block repeated attempts from your IP.
Country Codes Listed on Baidu’s Overseas Registration Form
Baidu’s overseas registration form currently lists more than 160 country and regional dialing codes. A code appearing in the selector means it can be entered on the registration form. It does not guarantee SMS delivery or successful account registration.
| Country or Region | Code |
| Mainland China | +86 |
| United States/Canada | +1 |
| United Kingdom | +44 |
| Switzerland | +41 |
| Singapore | +65 |
| Australia | +61 |
| Japan | +81 |
| South Korea | +82 |
Last checked by SDG: July 2026. Baidu may change the available codes without notice. A listed code does not confirm that Baidu’s verification SMS will reach every mobile carrier. Other listed markets include Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam, India, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and numerous countries across Africa, Latin America, Central Asia, and the Caribbean.
3. Agency-Assisted Registration Through a Baidu Ads Account
A standard Baidu account and a Baidu advertiser account are not the same. The first provides a login for general Baidu services. The second requires a business application and gives the approved advertiser access to Baidu’s campaign-management tools.
For international brands planning to run paid campaigns, working through an agency provides a structured application route. Baidu’s marketing agreement formally recognizes approved agents and service providers that apply for and manage Baidu Marketing services on a client’s behalf. Baidu Marketing Service Agreement

Examples of Baidu Ads
Depending on the company, website location, and industry, your SEO and SEM agency may request:
- A current business registration certificate
- The advertising website and landing-page URLs
- A homepage screenshot showing the company or brand name
- ICP filing details if the website is hosted in mainland China
- Additional licenses for regulated products or industries
Baidu’s published onboarding guidance identifies business licenses, ICP records, and industry qualifications as common advertiser-review materials. The exact document list may differ for an overseas entity.
After receiving the required documents, Baidu verifies your brand’s legitimacy (they check that your site is accessible, legal, and contains your company name/address). The approval takes around 2 to 4 weeks.
4. Log in with an Email Address
In reality, a Baidu account registration without a Chinese phone number can be challenging. So, it’s not uncommon for foreign marketers to try using an email address. However, you can only use this login process when the account has already been created.
Here are some steps you can try to switch your Baidu account login credentials from your mobile phone number to an email address:
Download the QQ App
First, create a Chinese QQ account (an instant messaging service with an email service). Then, download and install the app from im.qq.com.

When you open the QQ app, tap “New User,” select your country, enter your phone, and solve the captcha.
It’s also important to note that the versions of QQ in Google/Apple stores are outdated for email linking. We recommend downloading the APK file from the official website instead.
Download the QQ Mail App
Once you create a QQ account, install the platform’s email service app via app stores or mail.qq.com. On the login screen, select the option “Mail (QQ邮箱 mail.qq.com)” and use the username/password you’ve set on the QQ app.
This connects QQ Mail to your QQ account. After that, you already have a fully functional Chinese email address.

Tweak the Baidu Settings
Finally, update your Baidu business account so that you can log in using this new email. Then, enter your old credentials on the mobile app or website. From there, find the Settings tab and select the Security/Account option.
Look for the 绑定邮箱 (“Bind Email”) section and input your newly created QQ email address.
Once your QQ email address is bound to your Baidu account, you can log in by selecting “Username Login” and entering [email protected] plus your password.
This switches your login options to email-based, allowing you to access your account without Chinese or foreign phone numbers.
What Happens After Baidu Rejects Your Registration?
Repeated verification requests can cause Baidu to temporarily reject further attempts. However, Baidu does not publish a universal 24–72-hour cooldown for account registration, so that range should not be presented as a platform rule.
After a rejection:
- Stop requesting new SMS codes repeatedly.
- Save a screenshot of the complete error message.
- Record the number’s country code, carrier, time, network, and registration URL.
- Confirm that the correct domestic or overseas form was used.
- Clear the browser’s Baidu cookies or try one fresh private-browser session.
- Retry later without a VPN or proxy.
- Use another legitimate company-controlled mobile number if available.
- Contact Baidu support or an experienced agency after repeated failures.
If DIY registration continues to fail, SDG can assess whether the brand should continue with a standard account application or move to formal Baidu Ads onboarding. Agency support does not remove Baidu’s review requirements, but it can prevent repeated registration attempts through the wrong route.
What Baidu Account Types Can You Create for Your Business?
When opening a Baidu business account, marketers must consider the type of user activities they intend to execute. It’s worth noting that not all account types have the same content creation capabilities.
Standard Baidu User Account
Anyone can open a standard Baidu account. This account is used for all the tech giant’s online services (similar to a Google Account in the West), and it lets you sign into its official website and access its tools.

For example, with a standard account, you can use the Baidu Webmaster Tools (Baidu Ziyuan) and the Baidu Analytics (Tongji), similar to Google Search Console and Google Analytics. These tools let you submit sitemaps, track indexation, and analyze your site’s Chinese user traffic.
A standard Baidu account also allows you to use Baidu Cloud, Baidu Maps business listings, forums, and other related offerings.
Baidu Advertising (PPC) Account
Like other search engines, Baidu offers several advertising options to its users. This type of account is often called Baidu Tuiguang. It grants access to Baidu’s advertising platform, including search ads, display ads, Brand Zone, and more.
With it, you can set up keyword-based pay-per-click campaigns, target specific demographics, and track conversions. However, unlike a simple user login, a PPC account requires formal verification (e.g., business license, official documents) and an initial deposit.
While more effort is required, an advertising account opens doors to China’s largest search market, allowing your ads to appear on the first page of Chinese search results.

Common Problems You’ll Encounter During Baidu Account Registration
Verification Code SMS Not Arriving
This is the most common hurdle when creating an account on the Baidu app. Common errors include unsupported numbers, carrier filters, or frequent retries. Listed below are solutions you can try to resolve this specific problem:
- Check Spam or Junk Folders. Sometimes, international mobile phone carriers flag Baidu’s SMS as suspicious or spam.
- Wait and Retry: If you see “operation too frequent, please try again later,” stop and retry after at least an hour (even up to a day). Frequent attempts trigger cooldowns.
- Use the Right Page: Make sure you’re on the correct registration form. Some users use the ?overseas=1 URL to reach the overseas sign-up form.
- Valid Number: Use a regular mobile number, not VoIP or landline. Ensure the country code is correct (no “+” sign is needed once you pick the country). Some country codes may be blocked entirely by Baidu.
System Bugs and Glitches
Baidu’s registration flow sometimes has technical issues. The site occasionally mislabels fields or fails to load correctly, primarily if Baidu detects a foreign IP. A few tips to resolve these problems:
- Use Official Apps: If the web form shows errors, download the official Baidu app (from a Chinese app store or via APK) and register your new local email through the app’s settings. Some have found the mobile app interface smoother.
- Clear Cache/Cookies: If you see weird errors, clear your browser cookies or try a private or incognito window. Old cookies can confuse Baidu’s state.
- Different Devices: Try the process on both mobile and desktop. Some users noted that registration worked on the mobile page when the desktop was blocked.
- Ask for Help: If you get stuck, contact Baidu support or hire a China specialist agency to open the account.
Baidu Business Verification Options
A standard Baidu login does not automatically provide verified business status across Baidu’s services. Brands must apply separately for advertising, publishing, Mini Program, or location-based features based on what they need to achieve.
1. Baidu Ads + Real-Name Verification (实名/官网标识)
This account type is required to run ads and is helpful for showing “official” badges that make your site look authentic in Baidu’s search results. Foreign companies can verify with overseas business documents. However, eligibility and requirements depend on the market and business category. Regulated industries usually require additional documentation.
Best for: Brands planning to run search, display, or other paid campaigns on Baidu.
2. Baijiahao enterprise/Blue-V (百家号企业蓝V)
A verified Enterprise Baijiahao account gives a business an official publishing presence within Baidu. Its articles and updates can be distributed through Baidu Search and the Baidu App.
Verification adds a blue “V” identifier and may provide business features such as search profile cards, custom menus, contact details, location information, and lead-conversion tools. These features depend on the account’s eligibility and current platform rules.
Best for: Brands that want to publish Chinese content and build an owned content presence within Baidu’s ecosystem.
3. Baidu Smart Mini Programs (智能小程序/Smart Programs)
Baidu Smart Mini Programs require a separate developer application and entity verification. Onboarding is available to enterprises, governments, media organizations, and other non-individual entities, not individual developers.
Once approved and developed, a Mini Program can provide functions such as bookings, product catalogs, calculators, service inquiries, and account-based experiences within the Baidu App.
Best for: Brands that need an interactive service inside Baidu rather than a standard web landing page.
4. Baidu Maps/Business Listing
Businesses with a genuine physical location can add or claim a listing through the Baidu Maps Merchant Center. The platform may request business documents and proof connecting the company to the address before approving the listing.
A verified and accurate listing can display the business name, address, telephone number, photographs, and directions in Baidu Maps. It is most relevant to offices, shops, hotels, restaurants, and other locations that customers may visit.
Best for: Brands with their own or formally authorized premises in mainland China. Having a local partner alone does not give a company the right to claim the partner’s location.
Why You Should Register A Baidu Account (Especially As A Foreign Brand)
Brand Safety and Trust
Official badges (官网, 蓝V) and verified profiles lift CTR on brand queries and dissuade counterfeiters or affiliate arbitrage. Baidu created these programs specifically to help users identify authentic sites and reduce phishing.
Additionally, Chinese consumers and B2B buyers are known to place a high value on authenticity and official verifications online.
Visibility and Audience Reach
Baidu controls the largest share of China’s search market, accounting for 60–70% of all online searches. If you’re not visible on Baidu, your brand will struggle to reach potential customers who primarily use this platform.
-
An official Baidu account boosts your ranking in search results.
-
It allows you to run Baidu PPC ads, one of the most effective ways to drive local traffic.
-
Without it, your brand may be outranked by competitors or unauthorized resellers.
Access to Advertising and Promotional Tools
Registering gives you access to Baidu’s powerful marketing ecosystem:
-
Baidu PPC (Pay-Per-Click): Reach targeted audiences quickly.
-
Baidu Brand Zone: Brands can claim prime search engine positions with customized layouts, logos, and rich media.
-
Display Advertising: Place ads across Baidu’s extended partner network, from news portals to apps.
For foreign businesses, this means you can actively compete with local companies in a crowded online environment.
How SDG Registers Baidu Accounts for International Brands
SDG begins by determining whether the client needs a standard Baidu login, website verification, analytics access, or a formal advertising account. This prevents a business from completing one registration route and later discovering that it does not provide the required backend access.
- Confirm the marketing goal: SDG identifies whether the account is needed for SEO, Tongji, Baike, or paid advertising.
- Review the company and website: Our team checks the business entity, website content, hosting location, and industry category.
- Collect the required documents: The client provides its registration certificate, website details, and any applicable industry or ICP documentation.
- Submit the application: SDG uses the appropriate registration or advertiser-onboarding channel in China.
- Configure access: After approval, our team supports website verification, analytics setup, or advertising permissions according to the agreed scope.
- Complete the handover: The client receives the agreed account-control and recovery details, along with instructions for secure access.
Quick Q&A
Does Baidu work outside China?
Yes, Baidu works outside China. International users can visit Baidu.com and perform searches just as Chinese users do.
Baidu is not blocked by China’s firewall for external access. However, remember that its content is almost entirely in the local language. Outside of the country, the search engine will still display results in Chinese.
Is Baidu only available in Chinese?
Baidu is a China-based search engine, which means that its interface is primarily available in Simplified Chinese. Most of its services (like Maps, Baike, Tieba, and support/documentation) are designed for local audiences.
While you can input English queries and some third-party sites offer English-translated interfaces, these are unofficial and often less accurate.
Can foreigners have a Baidu account?
Yes, foreigners can have a Baidu account using an international phone number by accessing the overseas registration interface. However, responses to verification codes may be unreliable, and the system may reject some types of numbers (like VoIP or frequently used virtual numbers).
Can I register a Baidu account without a Chinese phone number?
Yes. Using an international number to create a Baidu account without a Chinese SIM is technically possible. However, users often encounter errors or blocked SMS because the system enforces real-name registration tied to Chinese phone services.
As a workaround for businesses, the recommended route is to create a Baidu PPC account, which can be set up via an overseas entity.
Why does Baidu block my registration even with a valid Chinese number?
A valid number is only one part of Baidu’s security review. Registrations may be rejected when Baidu identifies the request as risky. The platform does not publish its complete detection logic, so mismatched locations, repeated attempts, and VPN can be blocking your registration.
What can I do with a Baidu account besides running ads?
A standard Baidu account can be used to access the Search Resource Platform, set up Baidu Tongji, and submit Baidu Baike edits. Each service has additional steps: websites must be verified, Tongji code must be installed, and Baike edits remain subject to review. A standard account does not automatically provide access to Baidu Ads.
Which method should I use if my company has no China office?
Try the overseas registration page if you only need a standard account and your country code is listed. For paid campaigns, formal business verification, or repeated registration failures, agency-assisted onboarding is the more suitable route. It provides local application support but remains subject to Baidu’s approval.
